The Kingdom of God

The Kingdom of God

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

This verse of the scripture gives us the summary of the reason for our existence on earth. We are not on earth just for the cars, houses, businesses, marriage, etc. We, being the seed of Abraham, are here on earth for training unto becoming sons of God to reign with our Lord Jesus Christ in the world to come. It is a pig’s ambition to be so focused on the money chase and forget that life is more than meat and raiment (Matthew 6:25). There are three things God revealed in that scripture:

First Step: Seek ye the kingdom of God. This is simply knowing the will of God for us in all things. The will of God or the ‘desires’ of God for us is as stipulated in Deuteronomy 6:1-4. Seeking the kingdom of God means to find out the commandments, the statutes and the judgements which the Lord our God has given, and then bear them close to the heart at all times.

Second Step: Seek ye the righteousness of His kingdom. This implies doing the same will of God which was received in the first step. There are various steps required in doing His will, stated in Deuteronomy 6:5-9. Both what we are to do by ourselves, in our homes and in the life of our children.

Third Step: This is the promise given by God after the first and second requirements are met. God promised to bring us into the Promised Land (which is our destination or our expectations/blessings in that vocation wherein we are; it is not talking about a physical land per say). Every other thing to be added are those untold blessings of God in Deuteronomy 6:10-11.

What is the Kingdom of God: This is the possibility of living a paradise life while on earth. This level of living is possible is we can obey the dictates of seeking this kingdom. The grace we received by our Lord Jesus Christ makes this paradise life very achievable. This is why Jesus had to make it clear where this kingdom could be found, and he said: the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21).

On the other hand, the kingdom of Heaven is the coming paradise life in the world to come, prepared for the saints in Christ.

Therefore, we are to live our lives as the salt and light of the earth. To be the salt means to bring healing/preserve the works of God wherever we are, and being the light means living a selfless life for God and for humanity. We are to find out our vocation/calling in life and be the light and salt in that vocation, for therein lies our promised land of blessing. It is a terrible thing for one to be outside his/her destiny/calling in life, for such a man can neither achieve anything meaningful nor fulfil God’s purposes for his life.

People complain about the evils in the earth and some blaspheme God by saying that if there was God, they wouldn’t be suffering. Yet they forget that man has always been the cause of his problems: man has rejected the ways of his God and devised his own ways.

How to live in the kingdom of God:
It is possible to enjoy paradise life on earth, but there are things we have to be aware of and live by. The Bible said we should work out our salvation with fear and trembling, which means there is work needed for us to achieve whatever we want in life. We have a part to play; the Lord Jesus has only shown us the way, yet we are expected to actually do the ‘walking’ on that way. Seeking the kingdom of God and its righteousness should be our utmost focus, because inside it lies our provisions and every good thing we desire.

  • Find out your destiny. This is very easy, yet many people are outside their destinies and yet expect to succeed in life. You have to find out the area where God has called you to be in because every vocation is a calling (1Peter 4:10).
  • Know the statutes and commandments of God and live by them. Grace is not a license to sin neither is it an opportunity to live our lives the way we like, but grace is an enablement given to us to help us stand immediately when we fall. If we are law-breakers, we cannot be sons of the kingdom (1John 2:1-6).
  • Know the ordinances of heaven and establish them. As there can be no problem-free life without knowledge, we cannot afford to live in lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6, Job 38:33).
  • You must live by faith and not by sight. Believe it, confess it and stand by your confession (Hebrews 11:6).
  • Owe no man anything, because whomsoever you owe, ye are become a slave unto that person. That means keep your hands clean at all times, such that no claim can be found against you (John 14:30).
